Nokia Lumia 1020 - Why should it be "Hold" and not "Buy"

Nokia is back!

Its trending in the Google search for the last few days for the right reasons. Its kind of a sensation really to even think of a 41MP camera, and they packed it in a phone! What an engineering achievement. But leaving aside all the noise around, is it worth buying? Lets look a little deeper:

From the various reviews and specs available in the web, we already know that its a six-lens Carl Zeiss optics with an ultra-large camera sensor. It has auto-focus, manual focus, dual flash, 1080p HD video, superb low-light picture taking capability, improved image stabilization through bearings, wide angle and so on..Its a real delight to any camera buff, to have all these features within a phone, which fits into your palm and you can carry it with you in the pocket for all the candid shots every day.

But I have only 2 issues which is blocking me in marking it as a "Buy".
a) Its not Android and b) Its 41MP!

Well, the Android part is self-explanatory. You might already be aware of that there were news/rumors floating around sometime back that MSFT won't support Windows Phone 8 beyond April 2014 which was extended very recently to 2015 (read here). It doesn't give the users much of a comfort when such rumors frequently float the market. Also Windows phone is now nowhere in terms of market penetration. Its App stores are not having all the variety of Android and iOS app stores. And the fun of smartphones these days comes from the apps only. So I am not yet convinced to recommend someone a Windows phone.

And now the 41MP part. Well, if you want to use the 41MP capacity to the fullest (they would allow you to use max 39MP in RAW mode), what would be the size of each image? I have tried to take some RAW images using my Canon EOS 8MP camera - it goes to around 15MB to 20MB. I guess the size here won't be smaller than that. The 32 GB storage would come as a peanut if someone starts using the 41MP camera with its fullest capability and would soon run out of storage. Here comes the friendly MSFT - they are offering SkyDrive connectivity with the phone automatically, with 7GB of storage for free.

And what happens after that 7GB quota is over? Friendly MSFT is smiling :-)

Bottomline - wait a while, the Korean copycat might come out with a fitting reply soon, that too on Android.
